“It is of great use to the sailor to know the length of his line, though he cannot with it fathom all the depths of the ocean.” – John Locke (8/29/1632 – 10/28/1704)

John Locke – 8/29/1632 – 10/28/1704

Was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism". Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Sir Francis Bacon, he is equally important to social contract theory. His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. His writings influenced Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, many Scottish Enlightenment thinkers, as well as the American revolutionaries. His contributions to classical republicanism and liberal theory are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.

Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as David Hume, Rousseau, and Immanuel Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that, at birth, the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. Contrary to Cartesian philosophy based on pre-existing concepts, he maintained that we are born without innate ideas, and that knowledge is instead determined only by experience derived from sense perception. This is now known as empiricism. An example of Locke's belief in empiricism can be seen in his quote, "whatever I write, as soon as I discover it not to be true, my hand shall be the forwardest to throw it into the fire." This shows the ideology of science in his observations in that something must be capable of being tested repeatedly and that nothing is exempt from being disproven. Challenging the work of others, Locke is said to have established the method of introspection, or observing the emotions and behaviours of one's self.

Air Force Academy turns 61 today

The United States Air Force Academy (also known as USAFA, the Air Force Academy, or the Academy), is a military academy for officer cadets of the United States Air Force. Its campus is located in the western United States in Colorado, immediately north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County.
The Academy's stated mission is "to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation." It is the youngest of the five U.S. service academies, having graduated its first class 60 years ago in 1959, however it is the third in seniority. Graduates of the Academy's four-year program receive a Bachelor of Science degree, and are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force. The Academy is also one of the largest tourist attractions in Colorado, attracting approximately a million visitors each year.
Admission is extremely competitive, with nominations divided equally among Congressional districts. Recent incoming classes have had about 1,200 cadets; historically, just under 1,000 of those will graduate. Tuition along with room and board are all paid for by the Air Force. Cadets receive a monthly stipend, but incur a commitment to serve a number of years of military service after graduation.
The program at the Academy is guided by the Air Force's core values of "Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do", and based on four "pillars of excellence": military training, academics, athletics and character development. In addition to a rigorous military training regimen, cadets also take a broad academic course load with an extensive core curriculum in engineering, humanities, social sciences, basic sciences, military studies and physical education. All cadets participate in either intercollegiate or intramural athletics, and a thorough character development and leadership curriculum provides cadets a basis for future officership. Each of the components of the program is intended to give cadets the skills and knowledge that they will need for success as officers.

James Mattis

Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis in an interview released Thursday defended his resignation from the Trump administration last year as well as his decision not to outwardly criticize the sitting president, even in his new book.
"I had no choice but to leave," he told The Atlantic in the interview. "That's why (my resignation) letter is in the book. I want people to understand why I couldn't stay."
Mattis resigned as President Donald Trump's first defense secretary in late December after the President announced plans to withdraw US troops from Syria, citing irreconcilable policy differences in a letter to Trump that took many in Washington by surprise. His latest interview follows a string of public statements Mattis has made implicitly criticizing his former commander in chief, with whom he sharply disagreed on matters of international engagement and alliances.
"I've been informed by four decades of experience, and I just couldn't connect the dots anymore," he added.

Twitterverse

“Look what [@realDonaldTrump] did with Japan at the G7. This is a huge trade agreement he secured with them— agriculture, beef, but also digital technology." was the quote from KellyAnne Conway today. Will the people call her out when no trade actually results?  Pundits want to know.

From the glorious leader himself “The Wall is going up very fast despite total Obstruction by Democrats in Congress, and elsewhere!" Where?  Also how is Mexico paying for this?

Stock Market and First derivatives

Is it just me, or does anyone else actually look at the unemployment claims and stock market claims and do a little math extrapolation?

            Unemployment

Take a look at the above chart.  If you take the first derivative to determine the slop of the line from Jan 1, 2009 to Jan 1, 2017 then do the same from Jan 1, 2017 to Jan 1, 2019 you will notice the rate of decrease changes.  If the current POTUS is so great, why did the slope change?  The truth is simply that 3.7% is pretty much full employment in the USA and the slope had to change, the humorous part would be that it is simply a continuation of the existing policies.

          Dow Jones

Notice anything similar here?  The slope remains the same.  So if the current occupant is so great why did the slope remain the same?  Do the math!!!  In the end you only have the raw data to determine if you are being fed bad information.
Up next, let us look at the debt and deficit with the same harsh light.

The Sum Up
The A/C repair team fixed the downstairs A/C.  The guy arrived at 1:15 and left a 3:15. Will it stay fixed?  Stay Tuned. The University of Texas kickoff is 2 days away and I am beside myself with excitement!

That’s all for today sports fans.
