Today was my mother-in-laws birthday. She turned 79 years old and we went to a dinner party, held in her honor, at Dorothy and Sam Winters. They have been in Austin forever and friends of my in-laws for as long. In addition to myself and Susan, my sister and brother in law Mary Jane and Andy were there. Martha Charolette Talley was there also to make an odd number. They served crackers, cheese and shrimp for appetisers and we had cold cucumber and yogurt soup as a starter or appartiff. The soup was wonderful. The main course was duck, a bit tough, green beans and wild rice pilaf. Something about rice pilaf and my in-laws generation. They love it. For dessert there was a quite delicious super moist chocolate cake, from russell's bakery. It was very yummy and I could have eaten more that one piece, but did not need too.
Speaking of rice pilaf. My mother was the daughter of a rice farmer. As a result, I grew up eating rice all the time, so the fascination of rice pilaf is a strange to me. I believe that is like the way people from outside of Texas are fascinated by the myth of the old west. I see it in the way people outside of my state talk about Rick Perry. I remember when I was in college, and people from out of state would ask if I had a horse, cattle, oil wells and where was the desert? It was funny then, now I see it as a sad statement on the world in general about how we view the world around us. Need to work with the children on understanding the world.
Yesterday was a good day for Parker and his treatments. He did well and had no complaints. He went to "soul fire", a youth group run out of the local Methodist church and had a blast. He really likes to go and I am fired up about anything he likes doing.
Marietta's volleyball season is over. She now has study hall for 1 1/2 hours for the next 3 weeks before off season starts. I believe we will be starting the "HIT" center next week then she is off to Heifer for a week. In the meantime we are having a English class issue. Her instructor has taken 20 points off an English paper due to font size. While a 5 point ding for style might me one thing, the rubrick had no details about the font or size of the print. Without clear guidance that is a bit over the top. I have talked with Marietta about going to her instructor, pointing out the following:
1. There is no font requirements.
2. She did two interviews instead of the minimum of one
3. She put the interview on a single page as requested by the instructor.
I have been warned that this man does not like west Austin children, as he feels they are over privilaged. I want to laugh as I have worked my tail off to live in west austin and provide my children a better life than I had growing up, and I am being thwarted by a instructor.
This weekend is the Texas vs Kansas game. Texas might actually win the game. This is a nice turn after the last 2 games. We will see. If we do win, then we are only one game away from a bowl game. Funny that 2 years ago we were playing in a national championship game, and now we are hoping to win 6 games (LOL).
Well that is all for now, and that is my life so far!
