Google, Newsies and the Wall

September 4, 2019

Today in Austin it will be 98 with a low of 71.  The average is 92/71

We are 247 days into the year, 118 days until next year.

“The books of the great scientists are gathering dust on the shelves of learned libraries. And rightly so. The scientist addresses an infinitesimal audience of fellow composers. His message is not devoid of universality but its universality is disembodied and anonymous. While the artist's communication is linked forever with its original form, that of the scientist is modified, amplified, fused with the ideas and results of others and melts into the stream of knowledge and ideas which forms our culture. The scientist has in common with the artist only this: that he can find no better retreat from the world than his work and also no stronger link with the world than his work.”– Max Delbruck (9/4/1906 – 3/9/1981)

Max Delbrück (9/4/1906 – 3/9/1981)

A German–American biophysicist, helped launch the molecular biology research program in the late 1930s. He stimulated physical scientists' interest into biology, especially as to basic research to physically explain genes, mysterious at the time. Formed in 1945 and led by Delbrück along with Salvador Luria and Alfred Hershey, the Phage Group made substantial headway unraveling important aspects of genetics. The three shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the replication mechanism and the genetic structure of viruses". He was the first physicist to predict what is now called Delbrück scattering.

Hurricane Dorian

By some luck and well placed high pressure zones, Hurricane Dorian appears to be missing the USA and running parallel to the US east coast.  The Bahamas were brutalized by the storm basically holding stationary for 3 days just north of the main island with the Eye wall hitting Grand Bahama Island and the town of Freeport.  Take the time and examine the images.  Mother Nature is frightening in the strength and damage.

Newsies !!!

Today is Newspaper Carrier Day.  Today "honors Barney Flaherty, the first newspaper carrier (or paperboy) hired in 1833, as well as all current newspaper carriers." It is celebrated on September 4, the anniversary of Flaherty's hiring by Benjamin Day, publisher of the New York Sun. It is also observed by The Armidale Express, NSW, Australia.

Google

Today in 1998, just 21 years ago, Google is founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They have grown to the 4th largest company in the world.  Current market value of $751,170,000,000.  From a startup

UK Snap Elections

Boris Johnson loses support for his No-Deal Brexit plan, resulting in several MP’s to no longer support his push.  Johnson responds in a childlike manner by expelling the MP’s from his conservative party.  WOW!  You are either with me 100% or you are no longer a member of “My” party.  Amazing how the rise of populism has made it impossible to disagree with someone.

Money for the Wall

In order to build the wall, the one Trump promised Mexico would pay for, Defense Mark Esper approved the use of $3.6 Billion in funding from military construction projects to build 175 miles of new wall.  This is a bypass of Congressional power and the use of money that was determined by Congress for one purpose to another purpose.  This is combined with the $600 million from Treasury and $2.5 Billion from DoD.  How can the GOP stand silent when this man is bypassing congress and it’s responsibility.  Please someone call this man out.

The Sum Up

The A/C is still working!!!!  The University of Texas versus LSU.  Both teams won last weekend and are ranked #9 (UT) and #6(LSU)  with only 3 days I am again excited about the possibility that UT football is back.

That’s all for today sports fans.
